ARII (Japan) - current manufacture
I have about a dozen of these delightful kits found through Ebay and know very little about them. The 1/32nd range consists of at least 52 kits and maybe more, covering a vast range of vehicles from three wheeled vans to modern Japanese supercars. The emphasis is obviously on Japanese machinery with only a fairly good early 911 and the inevitable VW representing the rest of the world.Some of the 60s cars do bear resemblance to British cars (indeed the Bluebird looks like a small late Standard Vanguard) so may be suitable for conversion and many of the 70s cars were available in the UK anyway.Being Japanese cars they are all right hand drive vehicles too.
They feature a thin one piece body (sometimes the front skirt/grill/bumper unit is seperate) which is mostly well detailed and they remind me of what Airfix series 1 kits would be like if they were introduced today, being of a similar standard and comparable underside and engine detail. They do however feature seperate rubber tyres (and its nice to have a selection of new hub patterns for the scratchbuilder - at last),occasionaly chrome parts, windscreen wipers, mirrors etc as appropriate, although the wipers are a bit chunky.
Its a shame these kits are not more readily available in the UK as they provide a good source of donor parts at least and the 71 Skyline KPGC10 looks like it would make a butch looking slotcar. I have only made the 75 Gallant so far but it makes up into a good looking model quickly and easily but still has a little scope for extra detailing.I paid around £6 each for mine from Hong Kong but they cost about £4 each to ship so if you can pick up one of the better ones in the UK for under a tenner let me know.
Note that where a car is available in two close model years (such as the 1970 and 1975 Gallants) the differences are minimal! Usually it amounts to a different front panel only or perhaps an extra bonnet bulge. Where the model years are further apart it is a different casting altogether, for example the 1963 and 1965 Skylines are almost identical but completely different from the two 1971 Skylines which are different again form the 1995 one.
Japanese cars not only often featured different model names for the UK market but sometimes even different manufacturers names. Where known I have put the UK equivalent in brackets.
